“I thought you hated fancy dress,” I said. The two of us were plotting what we would wear to Ollie’s eighteenth birthday party in the woods. This year we were once again planning a couple’s costume, but this time we weren’t the couple in question. Part of me slightly pissed that Leo and Odette had come dressed as the Joker and Harley Quinn last year.

“I do,” she replied, “but I love seeing what the other fuckers here come dressed as.”

“How comes?” I enjoyed it, too, but clearly not as much as Clo did.

“Well, I’ve noticed something,” she said with a playful smile. “I’ve noticed that people usually dress as somebody that they wish they could be.”

“Huh,” I said, thinking back to last year, our first Halloween at Hawthorn together. Ollie had come as Batman, right? Did that mean he thought himself to be some kind of avenging superhero?

“Think I’m wrong?” she asked, stopping what she was doing to look at me. “Trust me. I’m not even just talking about The Set or The Sect. I’m talking about literally every student at this school who will dress up and live out their fantasy. They’ll be wearing something that makes them feel powerful, or sexy, or something in between.”

“But what about those people who dress as ‘nerds’?” I asked. There had been a group of students last year wearing suspenders, thick-rimmed glasses and checked shirts calling themselves the “Geek Squad”. Insert eye roll here.

“They were some of the most popular kids at school, aside from The Sect and Set. Sporty, with a lot of friends. They were trying to seem approachable, or down to earth, or some shit. It shows that they believe themselves to be the opposite. They were play-pretending.” She shrugged and although I wasn’t saying it, I did actually believe her. She had a valid point.

“I’ll keep an eye out this year,” I told her.

“You definitely should. We’re gonna have a blast. So, have any ideas hit you for what you and Leo can wear?”

“I’m thinking we should go as a power couple of sorts. Got to dress how we want to be seen, right?” I asked, and she laughed.

“Now you’re getting it.”
